About the Artist

Alan Masaoka was raised in San Francisco, California, and has been working with glass since 1975. He attended the prestigious Pilchuck Glass School in Washington State, and has studied with renowned designers Ludwig Schaffrath and Johannes Schreider, both of whom have heavily influenced Masaoka’s work and overall design sense.

Masaoka began his first glass business, Architectural Glass Design, in Seattle in 1975. In 1980 Masaoka moved to the Monterey Peninsula and established Masaoka Glass Design. He moved the studio to its current location in 1998, and has since continued to expand the space into additional glassblowing and workshop space, as well as the Masaoka Design Gallery.

Masaoka is known for his unique signature style of contemporary leaded glasswork, incorporating bevels and hand-blown German art glass. His work also includes etched glass, reverse glass painting, kiln cast and fused glass techniques.

Alan’s work has been exhibited widely throughout the United States, including both his art glass pieces and his extensive range of architectural commissions completed for both public and private clients.
